Note: Optimal surgical procedure will be suggested to achieve treatment goal after physical examination and consultation.
Surgery first approach (SFA) is an orthognathic approach that consists of corrective jaw surgery and postsurgical orthodontic treatment without presurgical orthodontic treatment. The traditional orthognathic treatment requires presurgical orthodontic treatment that involves 18–24 months of presurgical orthodontic treatment, followed by the orthognathic surgery and 18–24 months of postsurgical orthodontic treatment. SFA makes overall treatment period short. You can choose date for your surgery in your convenience!
Dr. Abukawa has been providing “surgery-first approach” since 2016. Corrective experiences have been documented in our research articles.
If surgical treatment is indicated, “Surgery-First Approach” is suitable for OSA rather than “Conventional Approach” because sleep quality could improve immediately after the surgery. If needed, postoperative orthodontic care is provided by Dr. Abukawa or an orthodontist.
